Create an Attractive Resume Employers Will Notice
Create an Attractive Resume Employers Will NoticeCreate an Attractive Resume Employers Will NoticeCreate an Attractive Resume Employers Will NoticeThere are rules for resume writing that are pretty standard and widely accepted by professional resume writers and hiring managers. But what about resume format and style? Can employers really be so picky about appearance that they ignore how well-written and on target your experience and qualifications are?Sure they can. But it should come as no surprise that style is a personal preference. While one employer may love your layout, the next may hate it. So what can you do about that?Honestly, not much. But what you can do is make sure youve nailed the fruchtwein basic style choices that will appeal to the widest possible range of hiring managers. You can put your own spin on colors and graphics, but components like font, margins, and indents should remain as basic as possible.FONTTypeface The cleanest, clearest, and most popular font choic es today are those without feet, also known as sans-serif. Some examples of sans-serif typefaces are Verdana, Arial, Trebuchet, and Tahoma. On the other hand, very traditional employers might prefer a serif font such as Times New Roman, which resembles newspaper type.Size You have some flexibility here, but keep in mind that resume text should not fall below 9pts or exceed 12pts. For most fonts, its better to stick with 10 or 11pts. Category headingscan be a few points larger than the body text so theyre easy to locate at a glance.Style Use bold or italics to make certain parts of your resume stand out. You might choose to italicize job titles or use bold or UPPERCASE lettering for category headings. But whatever you do, make sure youre consistentif you italicize one job title, make sure to italicize them all Also pay attention to punctuation (such as comma usage) and line spacing.MARGINSCombined with font size and style, margins contribute to the amount of white space on your resume , which is an important element for readability. Keep the margins between .5 and 1, making sure to set all four at the same size for consistency. Adjusting margins is also a great way to eliminate the problem of an unnecessary second page with just a line or two on it.INDENTSIndenting can be tricky if youre not familiar with tab settings. The most important thing to remember is to keep all indents aligned vertically down the page. If you indent your bullet lists, make sure all bullet lists have the same indent. In the end, make all your layout and style choices in a way thatlets the content of your resume stand out. Dont try to hide a poorly written resume under fancy text and over-the-top graphics, because hiring managers will notice. But on the other hand, dont be afraid to use a dash ofcolorto make your resume stand outjust keep it clean and readable.

This odd technique may finally get rid of your horrible winter cold
This odd technique may finally get rid of your horrible winter coldThis odd technique may finally get rid of your horrible winter coldIf youre anything like me then once October hits having a cold pretty much becomes your status quo. If there is a cold out there, I catch it and it settles right in and doesnt go anywhere for a long time. Now I try to do all the stuff you are supposed to do, but I am also not a perfect human being and cant sit at work all day with a blanket wrapped around me, drinking tea and orange juice in rotations. If I really wanted to avoid a cold I would have to avoid work altogether as well as public transportation as both of these places are filled with germs. And this winter has been especially bad as even when I finally got rid of one cold (thank you antibiotics) my cold hiatus was very short lived as I got one the next week.I am so desperate for a cure I have almost taken my sisters advice of ingesting some sort of elderberry concoction (Im pretty sure thats what all the evil witches gave princesses in fairy tales, but at this point, I am open to it.)However new research shows that something else may help to remedy my sad plight. There are actually multiple studies that show that simply listening to music can help you beat your cold. A 2008 study found that when300 participants listened to either 50 minutes of upbeat dance music versus a control group that just heard a random collection of tones, the former saw an increase in the antibody immunoglobulin A, which is very important for your immune system.Music fends off infectionA study out of Japan found that the subjects, who participated in bimonthly group sessions that had them listening to music, lowered their systolic blood pressure by an average of five to six points after three months of doing this. Highblood pressure can lead to many problems including heart disease. In a review of 400 studies, published in 2013 by McGill University, in Canada, it was found that music helped rais e levels of killer cells or white blood cells that help to destroy infected or cancerous cells. So, in other words, turn on some music if you have had a cold for over a week.H/t toBustle.

4 myths about having mentors (and how to overcome them)
4 myths about having ratgebers (and how to overcome them)4 myths about having mentors (and how to overcome them)Mentors are special people. They take us under their wise, experienced wings and help us make sense of the often-bewildering world of work. Mentors help us to sharpen our skills and smooth out our rough edges. My mentors have helped me discover new strengths, go boldly after bigger goals, and avoid (or bounce back from) some cringe-worthy career missteps. A beratung relationship is a precious resource, indeed. Are you making the most of yours? In observance ofnational mentoring month, and since it isnt always clear how to make the most of a mentors time and advice, I dipped into the Be Leaderly archive to pull together this list of 11 favorite articles about being mentored. As I compiled the list, I noticed some common themes four common mentoring myths.Like any worthwhile professional development pursuit, being mentored is something you can improve at. If any of these myths resonate for you, click through, read on, and make the most of your mentors investment in you.Myth 1 You cant just flat-out ask a stranger to mentor youMentoring relationships can grow organically if youre lucky. Most of the time, you dont just stumble upon a great mentor. Instead, writes Sabina Nawaz, its up to us to find people we respect and ask for their guidance. But approaching a stranger can be downright daunting. Right now, your inner critic is probably weighing in to add, Why would that awe-inspiring, accomplished, industry rock-star want to help me?To encourage you to make the ask, Nawaz includes a sample example of a persuasive, well-crafted email in inHow to Convince a Strangertobe Your Mentor. As you make your request, Be brief, be gracious, position yourself as a highly-valuable apprentice and as always, keep it classy, writes Alexandra Franzen. InDesperately seeking a mentor?Franzen lays out some additional, valuable advice on what to say (and not to say) as your co urt your drrream mentor.Myth 2 Your mentor will also act as your sponsorIn the early days of your career, your mentor and sponsor are likely to be the same person, says Carla Harris, Vice Chairman of Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley. (Whats the difference between the two? ?A mentor helps youskill up, whereas a sponsor will help youmove up.)But things get more complicated as you progress beyond entry level, cautions Harris. Having one individual fill both roles is less than ideal. Why? Well, your sponsor needs to be squarely focused on what youre good at, so they can act as a wholehearted ambassador for your potential and sto down doors on your behalf. That might be difficult if youve revealed your concerns, weaknesses, fears, or mistakes to them in a mentoring conversation. InAsk an Exec Can My Mentor be My Sponsor?Harris describes how to select the best person for each role.Myth 3 Youll eventually run out of things to talk aboutHave conversations with your mentor gotten repetiti ve? Dont write off the relationship too quickly, even if it seems like it may have run its course. Often, its not the relationship thats staleyou just need some fresh material to discuss. InFour Types of Questions To Ask Your MentorI share four categories of questions to prepare ahead of every mentoring conversation that will keep things interesting and valuable for you and your mentor.Want specific examples? Ive listed a bunch in25 Questions to Ask a Mentor. By preparing thoughtfully for each mentoring session, youll avoid the awkwardness of feeling like youre wasting your mentors time and ensure the mentoring relationship remains gratifying for both of you for many years to come.Myth 4 Being mentored is just for newbiesAs we grow in competence and in our careers, setting aside time to be the recipient of a mentors advice can seem like an unnecessary burden. But the complexity of situations we have to deal with grows too, and theres no way to predict when a mentors advice or pers pective could be a career game-changer.I am proud and happy to be mentor-rich writes attorney Lyndsay Markley, whose array of mentors includes trial attorney mentors, networking mentors, style mentors, judicial mentors, and rainmaking mentors. We dont have to be at the beginning of our careers to have a mentor, adds Markley inThe Importance of Mentoring How Strong is Your Network? This article first appeared on Be Leaderly.

One of my first days there I was asked to help physically restrain a child by holding him down on a concrete floor for 20 minutes against his will, while he screamed, kicked, cried, spat at me and shouted obscenities. I thought there has to be a better way. What would you like readers to take away from your book?Have empathy for people who arent behaving in ways you would like it is an issue of skill, not will. You should think twice before you believe the crazy colleague gossip
You should think twice before you believe the crazy colleague gossipYou should think twice before you believe the crazy colleague gossipWhen you hear that gossip about a crazy colleague who is difficult to work with, consider the source, especially if the target is a woman. These planted rumors could be based on personal animus more than objective facts, as actress Natalie Portman recently argued. In her acceptance speech as an honoree at Varietys Power of Women Event last week, Portman spoke in support of the Times Up movement and advised the audience to stop believing gossip without questioning why a person is being called crazy in the first place.Stop the rhetoric that a woman is crazy or difficult, Portman said. If a man says to you that a woman is crazy or difficult, ask him, What schwimmbad thing did you do to her? Thats a code word. He is trying to discredit her reputation. How gossip is used to undermine womens reputationsPortmans pointed advice on how gossip can be wielded as a weapon against women resonated, drawing immediate cheers from the audience. Words likecrazy have a long history of being used to undermine womens professional experiences. Writer Emma Carmichael even wrote a long list of coded words of female disparagement that get deployed in the workplace. When a male coworker has a personal grudge, Difficult to work with can be code for Sometimes expresses herself without regard for the self-esteem of her male interlocutors, she writes. Big personality becomes code for Frankly, a little too loud for your liking. These are not just verbal insults you can bounce back from and ignore the dissemination of gossip can ruin careers. Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein reportedly used his influence to intimidate women into silence and to derail the careers of his sexual assault victims. Director Peter Jackson admitted that he blacklisted Weinstein accusers Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino in response to a smear campaign by the producer. From 1992, I didnt wo rk again until 1995, Annabella Sciorra, one of Weinsteins accusers, told the New Yorker about how Weinstein ruined her professional reputation. I just kept getting this pushback of We heard you were difficult we heard this or that. I think that that welches the Harvey machine. When professionals call a colleague crazy, they are painting an ugly picture of an unstable colleague. The victim becomes too emotional to be believed. It turns the critique personal. To put workplace conversation back on track and to make workplaces a safer, inclusive place for everyone, employees need to eliminate this language from their vocabulary.

3 Areas Where Your Communication Skills Matter the Most
3 Areas Where Your Communication Skills Matter the Most One story I tell in my workshops is about how a former customer of mine improved communications between two warring departments. He told me that these groups were almost literally at war with each other and just couldnt play well together. He further explained that he would call members of the groups together and make them talk to each other.I also observed their body language and facial expressions, he said. If I noticed hostility, Id mention it and tell them I could see their hostility. Did I make them kiss and make up? No. But it almost got to that point. This story illustrates how communication is crucial in a work environment. Its also crucial while youre in school and during your job search. Basically, youre always on.If you havent given thought to your communications, you should consider the following three areas where its essential to your success. At SchoolUniversity is the beginning of the rest of your life, as the clich goes. Therefore, its important that you strengthen your verbal and written communication skills. And you dont have to major in communications to do this.Your Verbal CommunicationsTake advantage of any opportunities you have to present in front of a group. As scary as it may seem, you will be better prepared for the workforce. Try to ignore your fear and think aboutthis as a challenge instead.Youre not only communicating with your mouth, though youre also communicating with your body language, facial expressions, and voice intonation. The more animated you are (within reason) the better your message will come across. Some believe that effective communications is at least 90 percent or more physical presentation.Your Written CommunicationsWhen you write expository papers for your classes, put your best effort forth. Be concise, butinformative. The working world prefers when ideas presented in writing are as brief as possible. This includes emails, propo sals, marketing literature, whitepapers, etc. I remember a marketing manager saying to me, Brevity is the key to success. She was right.Youll learn that when you leave college and enter your job search, your success will depend on your marketing campaign. This will include your written and verbal communications. Dont focus on only one form of communication. Practice it all.During the Job SearchNetworking will be a valuable activity duringyour job search, and itrequires excellent communication skills. Its through networking that you canpenetrate the hidden job market, which is a topic in itself. Your goal is to become known to the people who matter.Important forms of communication include your ability to articulate your talents and your goals. Its also important to listen to the people with whom youre networking.Listening is a key component of communications. Ive been to networking events where I felt like a sounding board. Dont do that to others.Once your networking has leuchtdiode you to the decision makers of organizations, its time to put your written communication skills to use. Write resumes (plural) that speak to the needs of employers. Create a strong online presence with your LinkedIn profile. The interview will arrive after youve put your efforts into networking and writing strong marketing documents. Its at the interview that youll have to shine via youranswers to the tough questions. Youll have to come across as confident and affable. Youll have to demonstrate your verbal communication skills.Dont forget aboutbody language and facial expressions. Appear relaxed but not too relaxed to the point where youre slumping in your chairsmile when appropriate and maintain eye contact to show youre interested. At WorkCongratulations, you landed a job Now,your communication skills will help you in performing well and progressing through the ranks. Your colleagues and supervisors will expect you to be articulate and clear when presenting ideas.Company meetings ar e a great example of how important it is to present clear ideas. Lets say you have to report on the social marketing campaign youre working on. The group of 20people in front of you including the director of the organization want to know the specifics of the project. To your credit, youve come prepared. You walk to the center of the room (dont sit) to deliver your PowerPoint presentation. You flick through each slide, talking about how youll employ Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to promote the organization.Your body language demonstrates confidence, the tone of your voice is upbeat, you smile, and you communicate effectively with your hands. You notice that the director is smiling and nodding while youre talking.Bringing It All TogetherCommunication constantly ranks high on employers lists of essential skills. Its no secret why, given these three areas where communication matters. How youre graded in school relies on how well you present your projects and how well you write your pa pers. Your success in the job search depends on your ability to network, write your marketing literature, and acethe interview. Finally, your communication skills will come in handy when you areactually in the workforce, doingyour job.Bob McIntosh, CPRW, is a career trainer who leads more than 15 job search workshops at an urban career center.
